In my opinion, the two most pressing social justice issues in our world today are murder and inequality. Murders take places at all hours of the day all across the world. In the Middle East especially tens if not hundreds of people are killed every day in car bomb explosions and drive-by shooting. However, these reports rarely make any headlines because such news is no longer in surprising. In Syria, at least 100,000 people, many of them children, have been killed in the ongoing civil war. In major cities in the United States such as Chicago and Philadelphia, murder also very prevalent. On the local news, there are reports of shootings every night. The victims often die alone, bleeding out in alleys or on street corners with no one there to comfort them in their final moments. In most cases in the United States and abroad, the victims are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Such atrocities cannot continue.
Inequality, like murder, is practiced across the globe. Even in the United States, many women in the work force are still paid less than their male counterparts. However, women in the Middle East are treated far worse. They are not allowed to pick a husband for themselves. Instead, their parents find a man they consider suitable and the women are forced to marry the suitors even if they are not even remotely in love with them. Women are also not allowed to leave their houses without a male relative, making independence nearly impossible. Furthermore, women are rarely given adequate educations. They are seen as breeders and nothing more. Worst of all, women are often the victims of honor killings. If a women brings shame upon her family for any number of reasons, including being a victim of rape, she is often killed by her father or another male relative. The men believe the murders to be completely justified. Horrifyingly, honor killings are taking place in the United States. Men, especially, as well as women across the world must take a stand. Both inequality and murder must be eradicated.
